SOLD: celebrity homes off the market

Hugh Heffner, Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine are just a few celebrities who have recently cut ties with their estates. Here’s an inside look at their former homes.

Hugh Hefner’s Playboy mansion

As reported in January, Hugh Hefner decide to list his iconic mansion, but there was one caveat: He wouldn’t be moving out. The buyer would be required to accept a lifetime tenancy by Hefner. Turns out, Hefner actually found someone to agree to these terms — his next door neighbour, Daren Metropoulos, the son of billionaire investor C. Dean Metropoulos and principal at the investment firm Metropoulos & Co. Metropoulos paid $100 million for the mansion, and will be renting it out to Hefner for $1 million a year.

While the mansion was originally listed for double this amount — at $200 million — it’s not a bad deal for Hefner. Not only does he get to stay in the home for the remainder of his life, but he still made a pretty penny off of the estate. Hefner purchased the home back in 1971 for $1.1 million, which was the largest real estate transaction in L.A. at the time

Metropoulos plans to eventually combine his current home with the Playboy mansion to make one mega-mansion.

Pharrell William’s Miami penthouse

Singer, songwriter and producer Pharrell Williams recently sold his Miami penthouse located in the 40-storey Bristol Tower. The 10,000-sq.-ft. penthouse includes five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, 5,000 sq. ft. of terraces and its own rooftop swimming pool.

Despite the luxe features of the penthouse, it took years for Williams’ to get it off his hands and he eventually took a huge hit. He purchased the condo in 2007 for $12.5 million, and originally listed the home in 2012 for $16.8 million. It was then on and off the market for years until recently selling it to a New Jersey businessman for $9.25 million.

Maroon 5 frontman and Model Behati Prinsloo purchased this Soho loft in 2014 for $4.45 million. The once three-bedroom unit was then converted into a one-bedroom suite with an expansive living area. With a baby on the way, the couple realized their bachelor pad wasn’t akin to a family of three, so they listed the 2,800-sq.-ft. loft for $5.5 million. With 13-ft. ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed brick, it’s no wonder the couple was able to acquire a contract quickly.
